The Strange Case of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger

LibraryIn this funny, uncannily wise portrait of the dynamics of a sixth-grade class and of the greatness that sometimes comes in unlikely packages, Dwight, a loser, talks to his classmates via an origami finger puppet of Yoda. If that weren’t strange enough, the puppet is uncannily wise and prescient. Origami Yoda predicts the date of a pop quiz, guesses who stole the classroom Shakespeare bust, and saves a classmate from popularity-crushing embarrassment with some well-timed advice. Dwight’s classmate Tommy wonders how Yoda can be so smart when Dwight himself is so clueless. With contributions from his puzzled classmates, he assembles the case file that forms this novel. (from Goodreads)

I should have been more tempted to read this one because, after all, it has Yoda in it.  Unfortunately, I was afraid it was going to be more of the Captain Underpants type humor which I cannot stand.  I was most happily surprised.

This is one of those books that the kids are going to love because of the humor, but in which adults see an entire different level of growth.  I think it is more like the Wimpy Kids books or Dork Diaries than Captain Underpants.

I have had the book less than two weeks and it has already been checked out three times not counting me.  The kids who have read it have all wanted to tell me about it and one of them even made me my own Origami Yoda.  Thank you Ryne S.

I imagine it will not last a period on the shelf tomorrow morning once I get it back on display.  Who knows, this might be one I need to buy multiple copies of to keep the kids happy.

A Very Vampy Christmas (Love at Stake, #2.5) by Kerrelyn Sparks

Purchased

This is actually just one of the stories in the Sugarplums and Scandal anthology.  Maggie is one of Roman’s original harem and Don Orlando is the vampire’s favorite heart throb on the Digital Vampire Network.

This story has some really dumb twists, but for some reason that made it even better.  I wish the author had written this story as a full length novel rather than an entry in an anthology because there was room for a lot more plot development.

Vamps and the City (Love at Stake, #2) by Kerrelyn Sparks

Purchased

Who says a vamp can’t have it all?

Darcy Newhart thought it was a stroke of genius – the first–ever reality TV show where mortals vie with vampires for the title of The Sexiest Man on Earth. As the show’s director, Darcy’s career would be on track again. And she can finally have a life apart from the vampire harem. Okay, so she’s still technically dead, but two out of three’s not bad. Now she just has to make sure that a mortal doesn’t win. If only she wasn’t so distracted by a super–sexy and live contestant named Austin…

But Darcy doesn’t know the worst of it. Austin Erickson is actually a vampire slayer! And he’s got his eye on the show’s leggy blond director. Only problem is, he’s never wanted any woman – living or dead – as badly. But if he wins her heart, will he lose his soul? And if it means an eternity of hot, passionate loving with Darcy, does that really matter anyway? (from Goodreads)

I love this series.  It is light and fun and has no socially redeeming value.  However, this book, and yes I know it is only book two, is not one of my favorites.

Darcy is a whiner.  She may not whine out loud, but she never lets herself be happy.  Dying didn’t change the other vampires personalities so drastically, so why did it hers?  Bpy that sounds weird no matter how you look at it.

How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire (Love at Stake, #1) by Kerrelyn Sparks

Purchased

So what if he’s a bit older and usually regards a human female as dinner, not a dinner date? Yes, Roman Draganesti is a vampire, but a vampire who lost one of his fangs sinking his teeth into something he shouldn’t have. Now he has one night to find a dentist before his natural healing abilities close the wound, leaving him a lop–sided eater for all eternity.

Things aren’t going well for Shanna Whelan either…After witnessing a gruesome murder by the Russian mafia, she’s next on their hit list. And her career as a dentist appears to be on a downward spiral because she’s afraid of blood. When Roman rescues her from an assassination attempt, she wonders if she’s found the one man who can keep her alive. Though the attraction between them is immediate and hot, can Shanna conquer her fear of blood to fix Roman’s fang? And if she does, what will prevent Roman from using his fangs on her… (from Goodreads)

There are nine and a half books in this series and I have read all but the most recent before.  Some of them I have read  multiple times.  I love this series.  It is light, funny and has a good romance.  Each book flows well into the next and I get to meet old friends again.

There will be another new book in March 2011, so I expect I will be re-reading them all again in about six months.

Four Play by Maya Banks and Shayla Black

Purchased

In Pillow Talk by Maya Banks, Zoe is a woman in a committed relationship with her boyfriend Chase. Then one night, Chase reveals his number-one fantasy, which involves his two best buddies. Is Zoe game? She sure is, because it opens the door for a secret fantasy all her own. In Shayla Black’s Her Fantasy Men, a girly-girl named Kelsey plays football, craves action movies, and loves knocking back a cold beer with her three best friends-all male. Yet she’s never seemed sexually interested in any one of these hot guys. So what does Kelsey want? A fantasy come true for all four of them. (from Goodreads)

Sigh!  Maya Banks wrote one of my all time favorite books/series about the Colters.  Unfortunately, I think that is the only really good book she had in her.  I buy them all and continue to be disappointed.

Shayla Black is another author I need to quit auto buying.  I don’t think I have ever loved any of her books, but they are okay.  Sometimes I just get into the habit with an author whether they deserve it or not.

Styx’s Storm (Breeds, #22) by Lora Leigh

Purchased

When Storme Montague’s father and brother are killed by the Breeds, her father’s research is also destroyed — except for a crucial data chip that both the Council and the Breeds would kill to possess.  Betrayed to the Council, she is rescued by Styx, a Wolf Breed who is different from most other Breeds she has ever known.  Storme has something he wants too — but it’s not a data chip.

This is the first of the Breed stories that I remember the human actively hating and fearing the Breeds.  Storme has reason enough to do so, but I think this aspect is overplayed.  We are all affected by what happens when we are young, but she doesn’t seem to exhibit any growth in emotional development unless it is a strengthening of her prejudice.

Having said that, I really liked the book.  Styx is a Scots which is definitely a first for these books.  I don’t know if Lora Leigh is just jumping on the Highlander bandwagon or simply expanding the ethnic development of her Breeds.  She also introduces a different aspect of mating heat.  I really think she may be going in the wrong direction there.

Dark Peril (Carpathians, #21) by Christine Feehan

Purchased

Dominic, of the Dragonseeker lineage—one of the most powerful of the Carpathian lines—is desperate to go to the very heart of the enemy camp and learn their plans.  There’s only one way to do so: ingest the parasitic blood of a vampire.  He knows that it is a mission from which there is no return. With little time before the blood takes effect, he’ll get the information he needs, relay it to the leader of the Carpathians, and go out fighting.  There is no more honorable way to end his life.

Solange Sangria is one of the last of the jaguar people, a royal pureblood, a dying species that cannot recover from bad decisions made over hundreds of years. She has long been alone, fighting to save the remaining shapeshifters from the hands of Brodrick the Terrible: her own father, who slaughtered her family and everyone she loved.  Wounded and weary, she plans one last battle, hoping to stop the man who has made an alliance with the vampires, accepting that she will not come out alive.

They are two warriors who have lived their lives alone.  Now, at the end of their time, they find each other—an obstacle neither can hope to ignore. (from author’s website)

First of all, I loved the ending.  I can see all kinds of possibilities for future books.  One wonderful thing about Christine Feehan is that she knows how to end a book.  She leaves me begging for the next one, but does not have cliffhangers.  The storylines for each book are wrapped up, even if there are threads still waiting to be followed.

To me, Zacarias’ book should be the next one.  We have already (probably) met his lifemate and there is a really interesting twist to this one.  Unfortunately, it will probably be two years before I find out.

Wild Fire (Leopard, #4) by Christine Feehan

Purchased

Called on a dangerous assignment, leopard shifter Conner Vega returns to the Panama rain forest of his homeland, looking every bit the civilized male. But as a member of the most lethal of the shifter tribes, he doesn’t have a civilized bone in his body. He carries the scent of a wild animal in its prime, he bears the soul-crushing sins of past kills and he’s branded with the scars of shame inflicted by the woman he betrayed.

Isabeau Chandler is a Borneo shifter who’s never forgiven Conner–or forgotten him. The mating urge is still with her, and when she crossed Conner’s path, passions burn like wildfire. But as Conner’s mission draws Isabeau closer, another betrayal lies waiting in the shadows–and it’s the most perilous and intimate one of all. (from Goodreads)

It took me an entire week to read this book, not because it was slow, but because life kept interfering.  I really thought the Christine Feehan’s leopard and jaguar series were related if not actually the same series.  They are totally separate however.  I re-read this series because her new Carpathian book features a jaguar that has shown up in a previous book.  I thought it was one of these.

Anyway, this was the most heart wrenching of the leopard series.  Isabeau’s and Conner’s initial relationship ended in betrayal.  When they do meet again, it looks like he is going to betray her again.  Another male leopard is involved who Isabeau’s leopard finds enticing, much to everyone’s detriment.

I enjoyed this book and I ended up liking Conner.  The book I really want though is Drake’s who is only mentioned in passing in this one.  Maybe next time.

Burning Wild (Leopard, #3) by Christine Feehan

Purchased

Born into a world of twisted monsters, Jake Bannaconni is shaped and molded into a cold, revenge driven man. Honed in the fires of hell, he controls his world and rules with an iron hand. He has everything and anything money can buy. He’s ruthless, merciless and considered a man to leave alone. His hidden legacy, that of a shapeshifter, makes him doubly dangerous in the corporate world.

Emma Reynolds is a woman who knows how to love and love well. When their two worlds collide, Jake’s plans for a complete take over, may just come tumbling down. (from Goodreads)

I finished a re-read of this one last  night.  Although the beginning is horrific, I actually like this one better than the last.  I think it was because there were other people involved, not just those related to the Leopard community.  I particularly like some of the descriptions of Emma and how she responds to Jake’s orders.  He really doesn’t know what to do with someone who doesn’t jump every time he walks into a room.

Wild Rain (Leopard, #2) by Christine Feehan

Purchased

What has she done? With a new identity, a staged death, and a chance to flee the treachery that stalks her, Rachael has escaped from a faceless assassin. Now, thousands of miles from home, under the lush canopy of the rain forest, she’s found sanctuary.

Where can she hide? In this world teaming with unusual creatures walks the most exotic of them all. His name is Rio. A native of the forest imbued with a fierce prowess, he is something to be desired. Possessed of secrets of his own, he is something to be feared.

Whom can she trust? But as Rachael’s past looms as oppressively as the heat of the forest, and as Rio unleashes the secret animal instincts that course through his blood, Rachael fears that her isolated haven has become an inescapable hell… (from Goodreads)

This book is definitely an improvement on the novella The Awakening that I posted about last.  Because it is a full length novel (358 pages), there was time to develop the story and characters.  I loved both Rachael and Rio although I think Rio is just too good to be true.

There are only two more books in the series so far and I have to go see who they are about.  I really want Drake’s or Elijah’s story.  Of course, there is always Joshua too.

On a side note, I have decided to think of this blog as a book journal rather than a review site.  That is what I really want to do . . . keep track of the books I read.  Of course, I will have to review the Young Adult titles since I read them for the kids.  Really, I only read them for the kids . . . not because I am addicted to YA Lit myself!
