Bullet (Anita Blake, #19) by Laurell K. Hamilton

I discovered Anita Blake when the third book Circus of the Damned (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #3) was published.  This series immediately went on my “must buy” list.  Although I have preferred some books over others, it was not until the last one, Flirt, that I almost decided to stop reading them.

Thank goodness I gave her one more chance.

Bullet goes back to the Anita books I love.  Jean Claude is back along with Richard.  I really thought we had pretty much seen the end of Richard except as a peripheral character.  However, he’s back and just in time.

There are good vampires and bad vampires, lions and tigers and (Wait! No bears yet.) All of my favorite characters are back and even some of my “creep me out” ones.

Relationships are evolving and in some ways going in directions I never expected.

All in all, my first thought at the end of the book was “When is the next one coming out?!?

Revenge of the Spellmans (Spellmans, #3) by Lisa Lutz

Izzy has taken a leave of absence (or has she quit) from the investigation agency.  She is working for Milo at the bar and making much better money than as a PI.

Her parents are going on “disappearances” and are miserable.  Rae is acting just as cute as ever.  However, it is not so cute in a sixteen year old as it was when she was twelve.

I really can’t say anything negative about this series.  They are funny and have characters that you care about.  Things do not always work out the way I might want them to, but I can see why they  had to go that way.

Of course, there is still one more book.  Maybe, I’ll get my way after all.

Curse of the Spellmans (Spellmans, #2) by Lisa Lutz

Izzy and family are back!  The dysfunctional family of private investigators are at it again.

I love these books.  Lisa Lutz’s unique style of writing is mesmerizing.  I kept telling myself I was going to read one more section and then go do (fill in the blank.)  I ended up finishing the book before I could put it down.

In the first book, Izzy grew up.  In the beginning, she was still pretty much a juvenile delinquent, even though she was in her late twenties.  In this book, she matures (and I mean that in a good way) even more.

As usual, everyone in the family is keeping secrets from each other.  There is even something going on with the “perfect” brother David.  The uncovering of these secrets interweaves with the primary plot.

There are only two more books in this series and I am going to miss the Spellmans a lot.  I don’t think I would actually like to know these people, but I do love reading about them.

Colters’ Lady by Maya Banks

This book is the sequel to one of my all time favorite books Colters’ Woman.  I have no idea how many times I have read it, but I know I will read it again and again.  Colters’ Lady is a very satisfactory follow-up to the original.

Seth, Michael, and Dillon, along with their sister Callie, have been raised in a very unusual family.  Their parents are part of a menage a quatre relationship with one mother and three fathers.  However, the brothers never expected to find one woman that they would want to share between them.  That is until Lily entered their lives.

Maya Banks did not originally intend to write a sequel to Colters’ Woman.  Personally, I am delighted she changed her mind.  Although the same basic story exists, the relationship between the brothers in the new book is definitely different.  Those differences bring new plot twists to the story which I greatly enjoyed.

Another book involving the Colter Legacy is due out in early 2011.  The title is Colters’ Daughter and the focus is, of course, on Callie.

I cannot wait!

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

I originally purchased this book because I loved the cover.  Yes, I know, but what can I say?  Unfortunately, the story did not live up to my hopes.

First of all, I kept thinking “Edward and Bella.”  We have a dark, dangerous male and a clueless female who is always a victim.  At least Edward tried to stay away from Bella.

The author also seems to be following the new antihero theme of angels.  I cannot think of many titles right off, but two do come to mind.  Cynthia Leitich Smith released Eternal last year and Lauren Kate released Fallen.  Both of these books feature angels.

There was also a season of the television show Supernatural a couple of years ago that centered around angels as well.  I guess we can expect more of the same.

I didn’t really care for the book, but it did hold my interest.  The ending also kept me guessing which is definitely a strong point.

Even though this book will never be a top pick for me, I did find it interesting enough that I am looking forward to the sequel.  Crescendo is to be released October 19, 2010.

Hush, Hush is one of the 2010 Teens Top Ten nominees.  Personally, I do not know why it made the list, but I did not like last year’s angel themed book Eternal either.
