The Devil’s Thief (The Saint’s Devils, #1) by Samantha Kane

The Devil's Thief (The Saint’s Devils, #1)The Devil’s Thief by Samantha Kane
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have been a fan of Samantha Kane’s Brothers in Arms series for years. As a matter of fact, she may be the author that introduced me to the joys of a menage relationship (reading about it people, not living it!) I love her books, so I was excited to have the chance of reviewing her first book for a mainstream publisher. I was also nervous because I was afraid her style would be changed because the book was intended for a different audience.

I shouldn’t have worried.

The Devil’s Thief is a straight historical romance. There is no sexual kink involved, but the sex scenes are still hot. More importantly, the relationship between Julianna and Alasdair is heart warming. They got off to such a bad start and they have so many problems to overcome, you really, really want them to work things out.

Julianna is the more likable of the two characters. After her unconventional upbringing, she is determined to help other children who have no one to care for them. That is why she turns to thievery. She does not have the money to keep her foundling home afloat.

Alasdair, however, is a rake and an immature one at that. Although the heirloom belongs to his side of the family, he only really wants it to spite his cousin. That is until Julianna steals it. Fortunately, Alasdair realizes he must grow up if he is going to win Julianna and regain the heirloom. More importantly, he realizes that Julianna is what he really cares about, not the heirloom. He finally understands which is the true “pearl of great value.”

There are a number of characters introduced in this book who I am sure will have their own stories soon. The next book in the series, Tempting the Devil, is about Alasdair’s friend Roger. It will be released in July of 2013 and I cannot wait.

Summary from the publisher:

The best thing between Oliver Barrett and Mackenzie Williams is a fence. Ever since Oliver’s new-neighbor gestures were met with unfriendly responses, he’s decided to keep his distance. After all, he’s in this seaside town to get his life on track again. That doesn’t include working hard to get on Mackenzie’s good side—no matter how intriguing she may be.His intentions are put to the test, however, when his dog becomes infatuated with hers. The two crafty canines do their best to break down the barriers between the properties. And where the dogs go…well, the humans must follow! It doesn’t take long for a powerful attraction to build between Oliver and Mackenzie. They soon discover that the worst of first impressions can lead to the best possible outcomes….

My Musings:

The first thing I want to say is this is not the book I thought I was getting. The publisher’s blurb is misleading, although everything it describes is true. I was looking for a light, funny romance. That is not this book.

This book is so much more!

The more I read, the more enthralled I became.

Oliver is recovering from a recent divorce caused by his wife’s unfaithfulness. He thought they had a good marriage and had no idea she was cheating on him. Because of that, he no longer trusts his feelings about the people he meets.

Mackenzie is recovering from a near fatal automobile accident. She has always been a workaholic and is driving herself to overcome physical injuries, so she can get back to her career.

Neither one of them is an emotional state to begin a relationship.

Enter Mr. Smith, the dachshund, and Strudel, the schnauzer. For them, it is love at first sight.

My description confirms the publisher’s blurb. What is doesn’t say is how intense the emotions experienced by both characters are felt.

Both Oliver and Mackenzie are their late thirties, each with a bad marriage behind them. The relationship that develops between them does not come easily . . . but it does come. Watching their love grow and their struggle to trust each other was heartrending and heartwarming.

If you are looking for a strong romance between two people with real lives, I highly recommend this book. It is definitely not fluff, but a solid story that I will remember for a very long time.

Summary from the publisher:

As a war wages between the immortals of Atlantis and those of the vampire realm, a Poseidon warrior fights to save his world—and the woman he loves. And no risk is too great.

The desires of a high priest.

Alaric, Poseidon’s High Priest, has made a vow to Quinn, the woman he loves and the leader of the Resistance: to save her friend Jack before his last bit of humanity has been drained. Should Alaric succeed, there’s one intimate danger: he may lose Quinn to the love of the man whose life he saved. But damn Atlantis to the nine hells, he’s willing to put Quinn’s wishes first, regardless of the consequences.

The warning of a threat reborn.

The final jewel of Poseidon’s trident has turned up in the hands of mysterious Ptolemy Reborn, who claims to be descended from Atlantean royalty. He’s about to reveal to the world that Atlantis is real, positioning himself as king. But this magical terrorist is bent on chaos. The only warrior who can stop him is following his own path, driven by the even more powerful force of love. Atlantean powers over the sea could prove just as cataclysmic—for Quinn’s love, Alaric might drown the entire world.

My Musings:

I have been reading the Warriors of Poseidon series since the first book, Atlantis Rising, was published in 2007. There are now eight books as well as two novellas available in anthologies. I did not know, however, that this book was the final book in the series until I was close to the end. And I am not happy about that. Each time I re-read this series, I fall in love with it again. I hate the idea that there will be no more warriors and the women who keep them in line.

Alaric is the very scary high priest of Poseidon. His responsibilities have caused him to pull away from his friends and his life is extremely strict and lonely. Did I mention that an integral part of being the high priest is a vow of celibacy . . . that has lasted for hundreds of years? When I say Alaric is lonely, I really mean lonely! Of course, that is before he meets Quinn, the human rebel leader against all the monsters that are trying to enslave humanity, who also happens to be the sister of the wife of the High Prince of Atlantis.

Confused yet?

Quinn has been fighting the monsters since she was a teenager and is certainly not interested in becoming involved with a control freak like Alaric. Fate, however, has other plans for them.

Throw in a tiger shapeshifter that refuses to shift to human, a half demon-half Atlantean usurper to the throne, and a surfer dude portal and things really get interesting.

I loved the story between Quinn and Alaric. Both of them have been emotionally damaged by the things they have had to do in their pasts and neither of them feel worthy of being loved. Watching them find their way to each other was wonderful, although I thought Quinn needed to kick Alaric’s posterior a time or two . . . or three. He was so determined to stick with his role as high priest.

My only problem with the book is that I felt it tried to tie up too many plotlines at one time. There was so much going on that it was hard to keep track of who was doing what. I also thought the sex scenes were excessive. Sure, Alaric has been celibate for hundreds of years, but after a point they interfered with the story.

This is not a book that should be read as a stand alone. You really, really need to read the entire series including the novellas to appreciate everyone’s story. You will not regret it. As I said, I have read the series more than once and loved it every time. I will miss the warriors, but you know, Prince Aiden will need his book one day.

Read the series. You’ll understand.

Summary from the publisher:

Years ago, with the healing abilities afforded by her blend of Aztec and extraterrestrial blood, Liz was free to do as she wished. Now she is trapped in a blood feud, forced to heal one of her clan’s most dangerous rivals so they can exploit his gift of prophecy.

As she drapes her nude body over his, the rush of his returning strength overwhelms her, and his stunningly sensual caress pushes her to her sexual limit.

Zeke Neekoma never expected to hunger for a woman he’s supposed to hate, but now that he’s tasted her, he has no intention of denying himself the pleasure of her body—or of kidnapping his enemy’s most cherished plaything.

Brought to Zeke’s stronghold to heal his brother, Jacob, Liz surrenders her body’s most traitorous needs to the unrestrained desires of two powerful men. And the brothers fill the lonely void she has too long endured.

But her clan doesn’t intend to let her go without a fight…and the ecstasy that binds Liz to her lovers could be the thing that breaks them.

My Musings:

The characters in this book are descendents of two different alien races that visited Earth sometime in the distant past. The aliens bred with Native American women and gifted some of the children with powers. Those from Zeke’s people have the gift of prophecy while Liz’s people have healing powers. The powers are rare and Zeke and Liz are some of the strongest of their respective people.

Carreon, the leader of Liz’s people, has captured Zeke and he is near death. Carreon kidnaps Liz and forces her to heal Zeke because he wants to use Zeke’s ability for himself. This healing requires Zeke to have sex with Liz, so that he can be healed completely.

I am not sure why I did not like this book. The premise had real possibilities and some of the sex scenes were handled very well. However, the emotional responses of all the characters seemed forced and unbelievable.

Liz has suffered abuse and humiliation at Carreon’s hands, but she still desires him. Within minutes of healing Zeke, she is falling in love with him. Jacob, a grown man, only wants her because she belongs to Zeke. The only likable person in the story is Zeke and even with him things happen unbelievably fast.

The scenes involving sexual foreplay were explicit and arousing. However, the scenes involving actual sex were rushed, particularly the ones dealing with anal sex. I got the impression the author was not comfortable describing those.

Finally, I felt the book just stopped. Yes, it is the first book in a series, but there was not any indication of what was to come. Normally, I always finish any series I start. I can’t help myself. I doubt I’ll bother with this one though.

Ratings

Overall: 3 – It probably really deserves a two, but the plot has real possibilities and some of the sex scenes were very well done.

Sensuality level: 4 – I almost gave this a five because there is discussion of Liz being submissive and being whipped. However, it is nothing like a true BDSM book. The pain is simply mentioned, not described.

This Perfect Kiss (Bliss Harbor, #0.5) by Blake Sheridan

This Perfect Kiss (Bliss Harbor, #0.5)This Perfect Kiss by Blake Sheridan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Summary from the publisher:

She’s out to catch a man—if only her feet will cooperate.

Terminally shy, sometimes clumsy Frannie Colleti has spent most of her life focused on her business, content to stay in the social background. But the return of her former high school crush jolts her out of her routine, and she realizes she’s never going to get what she wants out of life if she doesn’t reach out and take it (before she trips over it). Her two best friends come up with a plan to help Frannie catch a man’s attention, but soon it’s clear that the men of Bliss Harbor—and any breakable items—had better watch out.

My Musings:

Frannie has made a success of her business, but realizes she has let life pass her by. When her high school crush returns to town, she decides to pursue him and make her dreams come true. Unfortunately, some dreams are not what they are cracked up to be.

Frannie is wonderful with her customers, but except for her two best friends, she does not relate well to people. Her pursuit of her high school crush who is now a famous screenwriter seems doomed to fail. Yes, he was always nice to her in school, but will he even remember her now?

This is a short (76 pages), sweet book and that is the only reason I gave it four stars rather than five. I wanted to learn more about Frannie and the love of her life.

Frannie is a wonderful character and I can completely empathize with her clumsiness, especially when she is nervous. The predicaments she finds herself in when trying to attract Nick’s attention are hysterical.

Nick seems to be a nice guy, but he really doesn’t know what to make of Frannie. He’s not completely sure she’s not dangerous.

Frannie’s antics do attract the attention of Sean though, who has recently returned to Bliss Harbor. Although he has reason to know that Frannie can be dangerous, he is interested anyway.

I truly enjoyed this book. My only complaint is that it was so short there wasn’t time to develop the personalities of Nick or Sean. I did learn enough about Frannie to feel I know her, but there was more character development of her two best friends than there was of the guys.

According to the author, this novella is actually a prequel to the series. The first book, More Than This, is due out soon and I will definitely be buying it. Oddly enough, it does not focus on Frannie’s best friends but on two new characters. Hopefully, it will have more of Frannie because I really loved her.

Checking it Twice by Jodi Redford

Checking It TwiceChecking It Twice by Jodi Redford
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

First off, this book is a sequel to The Naughty List which I did not realize until I started reading. It is not necessary to read the first book to enjoy Checking it Twice, but it was so much fun I have already ordered the first one.

Jana and Kevin have know each other for five years and have been in love/lust for most of that time. Due to emotional issues in Kevin’s past, he has resisted his feelings for her although Jana has done her best to seduce him. He knows that he is incapable of giving Jana what she needs in a relationship. Years ago, he even lost his best friend due to his problems.

And now, he is leaving town . . . for good.

Jana loves Kevin and cannot understand why he won’t give them a chance. She is also worried about her feelings for Nick. Although they have never met, they have carried on a long distance flirtation through phone and email. Can she really be in love with two men?

So, guess who comes to town and just happens to be Kevin’s long-lost best friend?

Nick has regretted the end of his friendship with Kevin for years. Now that he has found him, he is not going to lose him again. He has also realized his feelings for Jana have gone beyond a flirtation and it is time for them to meet face-to-face. What he did not realize is that Jana is in love with another man. Kevin.

Nick has known Kevin since they shared a room in college and that is not all they shared. Kevin’s voyeurism kink quite often let to M/F/M threesomes. Kevin’s background has made him ashamed of his sexual preferences. He is afraid to get close to anyone because he “knows” they will leave him when they find out what he is really like. But Nick knows that there is no reason Jana should have decide which man she really loves. She can have Kevin and Nick too.

Jana is not at all adverse to a relationship with both men. After all, her brother is in such a relationship already. –Remember book one, The Naughty List?– And Jana is not shy about going after what she wants.

I loved this book. It was a light, fun read, but there was also emotional depth. Kevin, Nick, and Jana are all wonderful characters. There were times I wanted to tell Kevin to get over himself, but that is only because I wanted everyone to be happy.

Read this book! Especially if you like M/F/M menages, light bondage, and some really hot shower scenes.

Dangerous Embrace (Embrace, #1) by Dana Mason

Dangerous Embrace (Embrace, #1)Dangerous Embrace by Dana Mason
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Summary from the publisher:

Sarah Jennings wants nothing more than a quiet life—alone.

Raised by an eccentric mother, their life on the road only taught her how to run away from hard times. But when she finds herself in an abusive relationship, this lesson serves her well.

Now, back in her hometown, she’s found a place she loves. She’s a first grade teacher, and with few friends and less family around, she has what she wants, a quiet life under the radar where she can be free of her past and live quietly. Finally comfortable in her own skin, she’s settled, and less fearful than she’s ever been in her life.

But it only takes one night and one act of violence for everything to change. Injured and afraid, Sarah wants to run again, but Mark Summors refuses to let her go.

Just when Sarah thinks she can have Mark and the life he promises, her past comes back to haunt her.

Mark Summors was born and raised in Santa Rosa. He married his high school sweetheart and never questioned his life, until he found his wife with another man.

Now divorced, he wants something more. He’s passionate about his job, he wants to protect people, and he devotes his life to it.

This time he’s protecting more than just another client, he’s protecting his future; at least, Sarah Jennings will be his future, once he convinces her she loves him.

My Musings:

I really wanted to like this book. It had a strong beginning with a likeable hero and heroine and a less common plotline than a lot of romances. I thought the first half of the book was well written and I was impressed that it was by a debut author. Unfortunately, I was tired of it by the time I was half way through. I even looked on Amazon to see how long the book was in print – 368 pages. I would have liked it better if it had been condensed to about 200 pages.

After all, I knew how it was going to end well before that. There was one minor plot twist I did not see coming, but beyond that it was just slogging through to get to the end. I even think the author was tired of it because the writing in the second half was not nearly as good as the beginning.

So, what’s the book about?

Sarah escaped from an abusive relationship eight years before. She has created a new life for herself under a new name and is finally beginning to feel safe. So, of course, she is targeted by a rapist. She manages to fight him off and literally runs into the hero of the story – Mark.

Mark, an ex-cop who now owns a security firm, immediately takes her under his protection whether she wants to be or not. Sarah has fought hard to be in control of her own life and does not want anyone to have any say in what she does.

Okay, although I thought Mark was a really nice guy, I think his take charge attitude was over the top. He had never met Sarah before, but he is sleeping on her couch to protect her from the day of the attack.

Sarah, who has a history of abuse by men, almost immediately trusts him. Her only issue with Mark is his take control attitude and she’s an absolute bitch about that. I also thought her “I can take care of myself” attitude was unbelievable considering how much physical damage she has suffered.

Their relationship swings from “hold me, I love you” to “I have to escape . . . don’t leave me, fine, go ahead and leave” in the space of a few pages. And it doesn’t happen just once. Sarah has a history of running from her problems and Mark suffers through the hurt . . . over and over again.

Remember I said the book went on for too long.

Finally, I felt there were various characters who were only introduced so they would be available for a sequel. The book is listed as first in a series and the author has a lot of people from which to choose.

Need I say, I won’t be reading any sequels?

Summary from the publisher:

Eric Warden knows that half-Shifter wildcat Iona is passing for human, living without a Collar in the human world. He also knows that if she does not acknowledge her Shifter nature and her mating hunger, it could kill her. Iona finds the mysterious and dangerous Eric, a wildcat and leader of his Shiftertown, haunting her dreams, but she vows never to “come out” and take the Collar, fearing backlash against her mother and sister for hiding the fact that she’s Shifter. But Eric is a compelling Shifter male, and Iona’s hunger calls to him.

My Musings:

Eric, who shifts into a snow leopard, is the leader of the Las Vegas Shiftertown. As such, he is responsible for a community of cat shifters, bear shifters, and soon to move in, wolf shifters. Eric was introduced in previous books and comes across as the strong, silent type. He does not have to prove he is dominant with violence. His presence alone ensures that everyone follows his orders.

Everyone that is but Iona.

Iona is a half shifter – half human living in Las Vegas. No one outside of her immediate family knows she is anything but full human. In this world, being a shifter means you are a second class citizen and are forced to wear a pain inflicting collar and live in Shiftertowns. Is it any wonder she has concealed her shifter side all these years?

Eric accidentally discovers Iona’s secret and knows for her own safety she must move to Shiftertown and join their society. Of course, safety is not the only reason Eric wants Iona to embrace her shifter half. He really likes the way she smells!

Add to the romance that is developing between Eric and Iona a dominance challenge from the leader of the wolves that are moving into Eric’s Shiftertown. Graham makes Eric look easy going, he is so aggressive. (I cannot wait for his book!)

Although this is book four in the series, it is actually the seventh to be published. There are three novellas which fall between main books. Being the compulsive person I am about series, I had to read the first six books before I could read this one for review. I am so glad I did. I cannot imagine anyone being able to follow the complex storyline without the background of the previous books. Many of the characters from the previous books show up in this one and their roles are not always minor.

Because of that, I not only recommend this book, I recommend the entire series.

I cannot wait for the next book to be published. It is titled Tiger Magic and scheduled for release in June of 2013. And yes, we got to meet the tiger in this book.

All I can say is “lions and tigers and bears, oh my” and don’t forget the wolves are coming to town as well.

Summary from the publisher:

In the heat of the jungle, jaguars are clawed, dangerous, and hungry for love. With hopes of overcoming night terrors and thanking the man who saved her life, Kathleen McKnight returns to the Amazon. A jaguar at heart, Connor Anderson doesn’t just protect her, but wants to claim her for his own.

My Musings:

This is the first book I have read by Terry Spear, but it definitely won’t be the last. Savage Hunger is the beginning of her new series titled Heart of the Jaguar. I have read other series featuring jaguar shapeshifters, but Connor is in a class by himself.

Male shapeshifters are generally portrayed as aggressive and dominant . . . very much the alpha. Although Connor is definitely alpha in regards to his streak of protectiveness and very possessive of Kathleen, he is also tender and loving. He cares about Kathleen. He doesn’t just want her.

Kathleen is a former Army officer who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. She was captured by drug runners in the Amazon and suffers from nightmares a year later. The main thing she remembers about the experience is being rescued by a jaguar.

Hmmm . . . I wonder who that could have been.

She returns to the Amazon in hopes of alleviating her nightmares and becomes separated from her guide. Fortunately, Connor and his sister Maya are there vacationing and rescue her – again.

I only had one real issue with this book. I thought that Kathleen accepted the existence of shifters far too easily. She was also very calm when Maya tried to turn her into a shifter.

I have a soft spot for shifters and cannot wait to start on the author’s wolf series. She is also writing a sequel to this book which will feature Maya. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find out anything about a publication date for Maya’s book.

UPDATE – The next book is Jaguar Fever and will be released August 2013.

Bloodlust by Faye Robertson

BloodlustBloodlust by Faye Robertson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

First off, this is a very quick read which is a shame because I really liked Amabel and Jasper. I would have loved to have more time with them.

Even as a human, Jasper was a lady’s man. After becoming a vampire with the power of enthrallment, no woman was safe. That was until he met a young nun named Amabel. You see, Jasper has a thing for nuns.

“Some men had alcohol. Some had narcotics. Women had chocolate, and occasionally shoes. Jasper’s weakness was nuns.”

He cannot resist them and normally the reverse is true as well . . . except for Amabel. For some reason, she can resist him and curses him before he bites her.

And what a curse it is! Amabel’s blood gives Jasper a conscience which is a terrible inconvenience. Jasper liked being a vampire. He liked “doing” whatever or whomever he wanted without considering others. Amabel has taken all the fun out of being a vampire.

For 160 years, Jasper has been a vampire with a conscience. He no longer seduces women with his powers. He only kills the bad guys. It’s a terrible life.

But what kind of life is Amabel leading all this time? She is still a chaste, moral young woman who happens to be a 160 year old vampire. She never bites anyone (pig blood . . . ewww) and has remained a virgin.

So, of course, their paths have to cross.

As I said, I really enjoyed this book. The characters are likable and the dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny at times. The sex scenes are hot, but more intimate than explicit.

My only disappointment is the short length. I really, really want to see more of Jasper.
