The Reformed Vampire Support Group by Catherine Jinks

Library

Think vampires are romantic, sexy, and powerful? Think again. Vampires are dead. And unless they want to end up staked, they have to give up fanging people, admit their addiction, join a support group, and reform themselves.
Nina Harrison, fanged at fifteen and still living with her mother, hates the Reformed Vampire Support Group meetings every Tuesday night. Even if she does appreciate Dave, who was in a punk band when he was alive, nothing exciting ever happens. That is, until one of group members is mysteriously destroyed by a silver bullet. With Nina (determined to prove that vamps aren’t useless or weak) and Dave (secretly in love with Nina) at the helm, the misfit vampires soon band together to track down the hunter, save a werewolf, and keep the world safe from the likes of themselves.
(from Goodreads)

Okay, this is definitely a different interpretation of the vampire legend.  They have absolutely no romantic appeal at all.  I have no idea who to recommend this book to because the vampire lovers won’t like it and who else would be vaguely interested.

It’s not a badly written story.  It’s just very strange.  I did have a difficult time with the beginning because so many characters were introduced all at once.  I actually ended up making up a character description list to refer to for the first several chapters.

This book is one of this year’s YALSA’s Teens Top Ten nominees.  These books are selected by teenagers around the country, so this one obviously has an appeal to someone.  Maybe it’s just me that is having a difficult time with it.  Give it a try if you want an interesting and different read.

Mockingjay (Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins

Library

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. (from Goodreads)

For once, I was able to get a book on the day it was released AND read it from cover to cover.  I was terrified someone was going to spoil it for me, so I will be very careful not to spoil it for anyone myself.

I knew going in that this book could not have a happy ending for everyone and it doesn’t.  However, it does have a satisfactory ending.  All the loose ends are tied up and nothing is left hanging for an additional book.

There is one thing that happens that I see the need for in the plot development, but I totally hated.  In another scene, something happens that I was hoping for.  I actually stopped reading long enough to shout “yes!” when I got to that part.  That, however, was the only time I was able to stop reading until I finished the entire book.

This is a series that I would like to read from beginning to ending without interruption.  It will be a long time before I get Katniss, Peeta, and Gale out of my mind.

Hourglass (Evernight, #3) by Claudia Gray

Library

After escaping from Evernight Academy, the vampire boarding school, Bianca and Lucas seek refuge with Black Cross, the elite group of vampire hunters led by Lucas’s stepfather. When Bianca’s close friend—the vampire Balthazar—is captured by Black Cross, Bianca knows she has to do whatever it takes to save him. But at what cost? (from Goodreads)

Talk about your love triangles.  Lucas and Balthazar both love Bianca.  She loves Lucas, but has strong feelings for Balthazar as well.  Oh yeah, Lucas is a vampire hunter, Balthazar is a vampire, and Bianca is in the process of turning into a vampire.  Sheesh!

Personally, I’m rooting for Balthazar.  Lucas has way too many issues with vampires.

Oh yes, let’s not forget about the wraiths that are trying to kill Bianca.  No one knows why they are targeting her, or if they do know, they’re not telling.

Stargazer (Evernight, #2) by Claudia Gray

Library

Evernight Academy: an exclusive boarding school for the most beautiful, dangerous students of all—vampires. Bianca, born to two vampires, has always been told her destiny is to become one of them.

But Bianca fell in love with Lucas—a vampire hunter sworn to destroy her kind. They were torn apart when his true identity was revealed, forcing him to flee the school. (from Goodreads)

You would think being in love with a member of a cult determined to kill you and all of your kind would be enough trouble, but no, Bianca also has wraiths after her.  What has she done to deserve this?

On the other hand, she also has two gorgeous guys in love with her.  Lucas, who is human and a vampire hunter, and Balthazar, who is one of her own kind.  Balthazar, who is gorgeous and kind and would do almost anything for Bianca.  How is a girl to choose?

I would recommend these books to anyone who loves vampire romances.  They are more like Vampire Academy and the House of Night series than Twilight, but should appeal to anyone who loves the paranormal.

Evernight (Evernight, #1) by Claudia Gray

Library

Library

She’s been uprooted from her small hometown and enrolled at Evernight Academy, an eerie Gothic boarding school where the students are somehow too perfect: smart, sleek, and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn’t fit in.

Then she meets Lucas. He’s not the “Evernight type” either, and he likes it that way. Lucas ignores the rules, stands up to the snobs, and warns Bianca to be careful—even when it comes to caring about him.

I originally read this book when it was first published. There are three books in the series out now with the fourth, Afterlife, due in March 2011. With all the wonderful YA books being published, I somehow missed reading the third, so I am doing a reread of the entire series.

This is one of those books that it is hard to say much without giving away a major plot twist. I had actually forgotten I had read it until I started it again. I kept asking myself, “Isn’t this the one where . . .?” And it was!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys paranormal romances. There is a love triangle with a really nice guy and a “is he really a nice guy or is it all an act” guy.

I wish I could say more, but it would really spoil it for you.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

Library

In a single moment, everything changes. Seventeen-year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall riding along the snow-wet Oregon road with her family. Then, in a blink, she finds herself watching as her own damaged body is taken from the wreck…

I had serious doubts about this book.  I don’t like what I call problem novels and I think YA fiction is inundated with them.  However, I was completely wrong about this book.  I am not sure how the author took what was a horrible premise and made something positive out of it, but she managed it.

This is not a paranormal book.  Mia is not a ghost.  She is, however, able to see what is going on with everyone around her while her body is in a coma.

There are a number of flashbacks in the story which explain her relationships with her friends and family.  This is not a story about a girl with a lot of problems prior to the accident.  It is the story of a girl who must decide if she can survive the accident.

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

Free ebookI hate reading a book that I already know how it ends, but this book makes it worthwhile.  Bree becomes very likable and I wish the storyline was different.

It was odd reading about the Cullens from someone besides Bella’s viewpoint, but I enjoyed the different perspective.  I had forgotten about Jasper’s scars until I saw him through Bree’s eyes. I never think of him as one of the major fighters because he is so slight in build.  Bree made me see him differently.

There are at least two more plot lines added to the Twilight saga in this book:  one is about Jane and the other is about a vampire named Fred.  I wonder if Stephenie Meyer plans to take them further.

Oh yes!  I really wonder how the wolf pack would feel about being called “howling vampires.”

Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan

Library

I rarely if ever choose to not finish a book, but I made an exception for this one.  After the first few pages, I told my husband I did not like the book.  I needed to read it though because it is a Young Adult novel and I am a YA librarian.

After 160 pages of forcing myself to read and it just did not get any better, I quit!  I think there were three different worlds intersecting, but I am not completely sure.  I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction, so the different worlds was not an issue.  They just didn’t make sense in this book.

I originally picked up the book based on a recommendation from a blog I follow.  I wish I could remember which one, so I would know to hesitate before taking another of their recommendations.

I rarely react this negatively to a book.  At least I can give it the compliment of saying it elicited a strong reaction.

Strange Angels (Strange Angels, #1) by Lili St. Crow

This is the best Young Adult book I have read this summer.  It is one of the nominees for YALSA’s Teens Top Ten list for 2010 and is my favorite so far.

I know many readers will make the comparison between Strange Angels and Twilight.  There is a female protagonist and two men who both strive for her attention.  There are vampires and werewolves and other paranormal creatures.

The main difference to me is that Dru is not a victim like Bella constantly seems to be.  She and her father fight the evil creatures of “The Real World.”  If you are familiar with the television series Supernatural, you will definitely see the similarities.

I purchased this book for our school library in January.  Unfortunately, it was only checked out six times.  I will make it a point to promote this book next year.  I believe the students who enjoy the Vampire Academy and House of Night series will love this one.

Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater

First of all, I cannot decide if the book was really that slow or I was just not in the mood to read it.  There is no action at all.  There is not even a lot of relationship development because the two main characters had “known” each other for years.

I did like the twist she had on lycanthropy.  The way werewolves were created was classic, but their lives were totally different.  She introduced another major difference as well, but I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone.

I read this book because it is on this year’s YALSA Teens Top Ten nominee list.  As a school librarian, I need to read the books, so I know which students will most appreciate them.  A number of my girls enjoy the “I love him/her, but we can never be together” plot, so I believe the book will be popular.

The sequel Linger is due out July 20, 2010.
