Parallel Attraction (Midnight Warriors, #1) by Deidre Knight

Library

Exiled alien king Jared Bennett is fighting for his people’s freedom. Now his rebel force has the one weapon that can turn the tide against their enemy: the key to the secrets of time. With victory at hand, only one human, Kelsey Wells, has the power to change everything. Kelsey is unable to deny the fierce attraction to Jared Bennett, but is unaware of the truth: although Jared is exactly what he says, he hasn’t told her everything. And when the future crashes into the present, Kelsey must decide if his deception will cost them the love that should have been their destiny.

Okay, I really wanted to like this book.  The series has been highly recommended and I normally  love science fiction/romance.  This was not the book for me however.

I thought the world building was slow, but my real problem was with Jared.  He is supposed to be a warrior and a king from an alien planet.  What he really is is a wimp.  The man whines continually about how bad his life as been.  Yes, there have been horrific things in his life, but a warrior is not supposed to whine.  Kelsey is the much stronger personality.  I actually liked her, but I kept expecting her to tell him to get over it already!

One of the secondary characters, however, has promise.  His name is Scott and I am sure there has to be a book out there for him.  Unfortunately, I have to return the rest of the series to the library because someone else is waiting on them.  Hopefully, they will like them better than I did.

I might return to this series one day, but I doubt it.

Back from vacation and information about a contest

I really do enjoy keeping this blog, but it is amazing how easy it is to become overwhelmed.  I have been on vacation for two weeks with little wifi access.  For some reason or another, I just didn’t feel compelled to type an entire blog post on my Droid!

Of course, now I am behind by fifteen books on my reviews.  I have been home almost a week and just now getting started.  I have Kate at Read This Book! to credit with getting me off my duff.  Kate is a Young Adult book reviewer with an amazing site.  She read 174 books in 2009 and is participating in the Debut Author Challenge hosted by The Story Siren this year.

Anyway, Kate is holding a $70 Giveaway for a gift certificate from CSN stores.  If I win, I plan on buying a new bookcase to go up in my bedroom.  Be sure and check it out.

Now to the book reviews!

Sizzling Sixteen (Stephanie Plum, #16) by Janet Evanovich

Trenton, New Jersey, bounty hunter Stephanie Plum has inherited a “lucky” bottle from her Uncle Pip. Problem is, Uncle Pip didn’t specify if the bottle brought good luck or bad luck. . . . (from Goodreads)

These books have definitely hit their stride again.  They are always good, but I was not as pleased with books thirteen and fourteen.  However, with Finger Lickin’ Fifteen and Sizzling Sixteen, I feel like the Stephanie Plum I fell in love with is back.

Stephanie is in the “off” portion of her on-again-off-again relationship with Joe.  And as often happens, she ends up staying with Ranger for one reason or another.  Is the “lucky” bottle going to make sure she gets lucky?

Come on Stephanie, this is Ranger!!  How can you resist?

This book actually  made me think a time or two that the series was coming to an end.  There was all kinds of foreshadowing going on.  Fortunately, I was wrong.  There are clues for further plot developments though.

The only problem I have with these books is that it is so long between titles.  She has added another series starring Diesel, so I am afraid the wait may be even longer.  I wish there was a new book at least twice a year and I don’t count the “between-the-numbers” ones.

Finger Lickin’ Fifteen (Stephanie Plum, #15) by Janet Evanovich

Purchased

“Recipe for disaster: Celebrity chef Stanley Chipotle comes to Trenton to participate in a barbecue cook-off and loses his head – literally.” “Throw in some spice: Bail bonds office worker Lula is witness to the crime, and the only one she’ll talk to is Trenton cop Joe Morelli.” (from Goodreads)

This was actually a re-read for me . . . never a problem for a Stephanie book.  Since book sixteen is out, I want to be sure everything is fresh in my mind.

I have not been very happy with her last couple of books, but this one was much better.  I think there was too little Ranger in the more recent books.  I like Joe, but I don’t want to lose Ranger.

Finger Lickin’ Fifteen has classic Lula and Grandma Mazer.  Lula is once again on a diet and I love the way this woman thinks.  Grandma is still making the rounds of the funeral homes causing havoc.  And, oh yeah, there is a body without a head or is it a head without a body and the bad guys are gunning for Lula.

I loved it!

Dreamfever (Fever, #4) by Karen Marie Moning

Library

He has stolen her past, but MacKayla will never allow her sister’s murderer to take her future. Yet even the uniquely gifted sidhe-seer is no match for the Lord Master, who has unleashed an insatiable sexual craving that consumes Mac’s every thought-and thrusts her into the seductive realm of two very dangerous men, both of whom she desires but dares not trust.

It’s a good thing this book was already published when I finished Faefever.  I am really tired of cliffhanger endings and book three had the worst so far.

I’ve said it before . . . these books are addictive.  I did not realize until I finished this one that there are only five scheduled for the series.  I wish I had known that because I would have waited until they were all published.  The final book, Shadowfever, is scheduled to be released January 18, 2011.  I want it now!

I am afraid I will need to reread the entire series just to keep up with the storyline.  I see a long weekend in my future.

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

Free ebookI hate reading a book that I already know how it ends, but this book makes it worthwhile.  Bree becomes very likable and I wish the storyline was different.

It was odd reading about the Cullens from someone besides Bella’s viewpoint, but I enjoyed the different perspective.  I had forgotten about Jasper’s scars until I saw him through Bree’s eyes. I never think of him as one of the major fighters because he is so slight in build.  Bree made me see him differently.

There are at least two more plot lines added to the Twilight saga in this book:  one is about Jane and the other is about a vampire named Fred.  I wonder if Stephenie Meyer plans to take them further.

Oh yes!  I really wonder how the wolf pack would feel about being called “howling vampires.”

Faefever (Fever, #3) by Karen Marie Moning

Purchased

He calls me his Queen of the Night. I’d die for him. I’d kill for him, too.

When MacKayla Lane receives a torn page from her dead sister’s journal, she is stunned by Alina’s desperate words. And now MacKayla knows that her sister’s killer is close. But evil is closer. And suddenly the sidhe-seer is on the hunt: For answers. For revenge. And for an ancient book of dark magic so evil, it corrupts anyone who touches it. Mac’s quest for the Sinsar Dubh takes her into the mean, shape-shifting streets of Dublin, with a suspicious cop on her tail. Forced into a dangerous triangle of alliance with V’lane, an insatiable Fae prince of lethally erotic tastes, and Jericho Barrons, a man of primal desires and untold secrets, Mac is soon locked in a battle for her body, mind, and soul.

I have said from the first book that I really don’t like this series.  However, I cannot put them down.  A secondary character has been added that I think I like better than anyone else, so maybe there is some hope.

There are indications of a “possible” romance developing, but since I don’t like either V’lane or Barrons, I’m not all that excited.  Both of them are users, regardless of their motivation.

This book probably has one of the worst cliffhanger endings I have ever read.  I HATE those types of endings.  I love a continuing storyline, but I expect every book to actually have an ending.  It’s a good thing that book four was already available when I read this one.

I’ll say it again.  I don’t like these books.   And, I’ll say it again.  They are absolutely engrossing.

The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child by Donalyn Miller

Purchased

Donalyn Miller says she has yet to meet a child she couldn’t turn into a reader. No matter how far behind Miller’s students might be when they reach her 6th grade classroom, they end up reading an average of 40 to 50 books a year. Miller’s unconventional approach dispenses with drills and worksheets that make reading a chore. Instead, she helps students navigate the world of literature and gives them time to read books they pick out themselves. Her love of books and teaching is both infectious and inspiring. The book includes a dynamite list of recommended “kid lit” that helps parents and teachers find the books that students really like to read.

The above blurb says it all.  She lets the kids pick the books they want to read and gives them time to read in class.

I am sure there are going to be people who say they can’t afford the time for reading.  They have to cover all the standards to prepare the students for “the test.”  Anybody remember when it was consider a terrible thing to admit “teaching to the test?”

Anyway, Donalyn Miller’s students do score well on the state mandated tests.  She is teaching them to read and to comprehend what they read.  How can that not help on a test?

This book is not a theory book or an ivory tower book.  The author gives solid tips on how to find the time for reading, how to build a classroom library, etc.

As the school librarian, my concern is whether or not the kids are reading.  I do not care whether the book comes from the school library, classroom library, public library, or from home.  I just want them to read.

I plan to offer my sixth grade teachers a deal.  If they will read The Book Whisperer AND implement class reading time, I will use my Scholastic Dollars to purchase books for their room.  Let’s see how open they are to bribes.  -grin-

Bloodfever (Fever, #2) by Karen Marie Moning

Purchased

I used to be your average, everyday girl but all that changed one night in Dublin when I saw my first Fae, and got dragged into a world of deadly immortals and ancient secrets. . . .

In her fight to stay alive, MacKayla must find the Sinsar Dubh—a million-year-old book of the blackest magic imaginable, which holds the key to power over the worlds of both the Fae and Man. Pursued by assassins, surrounded by mysterious figures she knows she can’t trust, Mac finds herself torn between two deadly and powerful men: V’lane, the immortal Fae Prince, and Jericho Barrons, a man as irresistible as he is dangerous.

For centuries the shadowy realm of the Fae has coexisted with that of humans. Now the walls between the two are coming down, and Mac is the only thing that stands between them.

I stated in my review of Darkfever that these books contain no romance and I stand by that statement.  However, there is plenty of lust to go around.  Of course, V’lane is a death-by-sex prince of the Fae, so I guess it is to be expected.

As I said before, these books are not what I wanted after reading Moning’s Highlander series.  They are absolutely addicting though.  For some reason the Dark Zone especially interests me.

I really like Mac.  It is becoming obvious that she can’t be completely human.  Only time, and the next book, will tell.

Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning

Purchased

MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless V’lane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….

I started this series thinking I was going to get something similar to her Highlander series.  I was very wrong.  The title of the first book should have been a clue because this is one of the “darkest,” most depressing series I have ever read.  Nothing good ever happens.

Having said that, the books suck you in.  Yes, there is quite a bit of world building, but the story still grabs you from the start.

I really liked the setting in Dublin, Ireland.  With rare exceptions, the entire series takes place there.  Mac, however, is from south Georgia and since that is where I am from too, I felt a real connection.

All I can say is don’t go into these expecting a romance.  There is NO romance.  There are suggestions of possible romances in the future, but no promises.
