Quote-tastic Monday: Eleventh Grave in Moonlight by Darynda Jones

eleventh-graveI have been in love with this series since I first discovered it.  Although the story line is wonderful, it is the humor that makes the books.  Charlie absolutely cracks me up.

Eleventh Grave in Moonlight is the eleventh in the series and there is no sign of the books slowing down.  As much as I enjoyed this book though, I have one problem . . . cliffhanger endings.  The last three books have had terrible cliffhangers and I am tired of it.  Not just with this series, but any series.  I resent being left hanging at the end of a book.  I am a fan.  I am going to buy the next book in the series.  I do not need something to keep me coming back.  If anything, cliffhangers make me want to drop a series simply because I am ticked.

No, I am not dropping Charlie Davidson.  I love the books, but I am tired of being jerked around.

Okay, off my soapbox and on to the quotes.  Both of these are from Charlie and in both, she is talking about her husband (aka, the Son of Satan) Reyes.

It was an order, plain and simple. And the fact that he actually thought I’d follow it was comical.

Like Charlie ever followed anyone’s orders.  However, Reyes just never learns.  I am not going to tell you what this next quote is in reference to because of spoilers, but I love it anyway.

” . . . That’s logic for you. Of the penis-wielding variety.”

Again, this is a great series and if you are just starting it, you don’t have to worry about cliffhangers.  Eleven books are out already, so enjoy!

I am still reading The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series and I still love them.  I am on book three now and as I said in my previous post, these are great books because of the story, not the individual lines.  However, that doesn’t mean there are not some great individual lines.  The ones for today’s post exemplify the characters personalities.  And that is what makes these books so fun.  The characters have great personalities.

So without further ado . . . Quote-tastic Monday!

I love them.  Of course, Wellington and Eliza are falling in love.  They just aren’t ready to admit it, even to themselves, yet.

Quote-tastic Monday: The Janus Affair by Pip Ballantine & Tee Morris

janus-affairSome books are good, but it’s really the individual lines that make the book.  Others are good, but you can’t pick out any piece of text or dialogue to explain it.  The Janus Affair is one of the second.  I love this series.  I believe it is the first pure steampunk series I have read and I don’t know why it has taken me so long to get back to them.  I read the first two when they were initially published and never noticed when the rest of the series came out.  I am making up for that now.

In these books, there is a gender role reversal, especially for the Victorian period.  Eliza Braun is a Ministry field agent, or at least she was, and Wellington Books is the Archivast – not a librarian as he is quick to tell you.  And yes, I do love their names.

Anyway, the most memorable line so far is from Books when he is talking to Braun,

“Admittedly, yes, but even you, the South Pacific Angel of Wanton Destruction and Calamity has to sleep sometime.”

And that pretty much describes Eliza and her penchant for explosives.

There are five books in the series and a the first book in a spinoff series was published in 2016.  I really, really need to get caught up on my TBR mountain.

Quote-tastic Monday: Telling Tails (Second Chance Cat Mysteries, #4) by Sofie Ryan

telling-tailsI love this author.  She writes as Sofie Ryan, Sofie Kelly, and Darlene Ryan.  I have never read anything of hers under the last name, but I have gobbled up her other books.

The main character (depending on your point of view) in this particular series is either Sarah, the upcycling shop owner, or Elvis the cat.  I know which way I lean.  Anyway, friends of her grandmother’s use the shop as the base for their private investigation service, Charlotte’s Angels.

Yeah, I know.

Everyone in the group is at least seventy years old and try as she might Sarah keeps getting dragged into helping with the cases.  Elvis, however, is integral in solving them and can be quite smug about it.

The relationships between the characters are like a large family.  They love each other, but they can certainly get on each others’ nerves.

“I heard that tone,” she said.

“Good,” I told her, leaning down to kiss her forehead.  “I’d hate to think I’d been too subtle.”

And sometimes the dialogue is just funny.

“Are you crazy?” she asked.

“It’s a possibility,” I said lightly.  “I’ve never been officially tested.”

“Well, may you should be so we can get confirmation.”

That sounds like a line right out of Big Bang Theory.

This book was released this past Tuesday and although I had another book I was supposed to read next, it jumped to the top of the list.  Again, as I say with most if not all series, read them in order.  They will be so much better if you do.

Quote-tastic Monday: Heart of Stone by Christine Warren

I re-read this book for two reasons.  It was sent to me by NetGalley over two years ago and I never reviewed it.

And book five is due out in February, so I wanted to re-read this series to be ready for it.

Well I re-read it and had forgotten how much I enjoyed it.  And yes, I did review it.

Here are a couple of quotes to help you understand why I like it so much.

Of course, she’d continued to argue with him, because the gargoyle operated under the vastly mistaken assumption that he was always right, and Ella felt she had a duty to point out how misguided such a belief really was.

And, Ella and Kees are going into battle and she really hopes they’re not going to die because

She really hoped she and Kees won this one.  She was wearing her “I’m going to get worked really hard, sweat like a pig, and want to kick Kees in the nuts” clothes, not her “It’s okay if I die in this because at least I look hot” clothes.

A girl had her pride.

Not to mention having her priorities straight, right?

Quote-tastic Monday: The Cowboy by Jayne Ann Krentz

Talk about an oldie.  This book was originally published in June 1990 and yes, I bought it then.  For some reason, I had a reading slump a few days ago and my solution is always to read something that I know I will enjoy.  Needless to say, that means pick up a Jayne Ann Krentz regardless of what name it is written under.

She has always written alpha males and strong females.  Her earlier books sometimes make me (and the heroine) want to “Gibbs” the guy in the back of the head, they can be so controlling.  (If you’re a NCIS fan, you’ll get what I mean.)  Even so, I love them and I love that I can depend on JAK no matter what she writes.

So, a quote to demonstrate the relationship and the fact that JAK can always interject a little humor when it is needed.

“I want you to marry me.  But I want you to come to me willingly, Maggie, love.  Not because I’ve pushed you into it.”  Rafe drew a quick breath and got the rash words out before he could rethink them. “Take all the time you need to make your decision.”

“So long as I come up with the right one?”  Her eyes danced mischievously.

He grinned slowly, relaxing inside.  “You’ve got it.  So long as it’s the right one.”

And I’m over my slump.  I just needed something to make me remember why I love to read so much and this book did it for me.

Quote-tastic Monday: One Fell Sweep by Ilona Andrews

Yes, yes, I know.  It’s not Monday.  Let it go people.  I’m on Christmas break.

I have three other books that I should have already reviewed.  I had every intention of reviewing them before I STARTED ANOTHER BOOK.  So what happens?  A new Innkeeper Chronicles title is released.  All of my good intentions went the way of intentions everywhere at this time of year.  In other words, I ignored them.

I used the second book in this series for my Quote-tastic Monday back in November.  I had just discovered the series at that time and, obviously, could not wait for the third book.  It’s an amazing series.  There are aliens (of the outer space variety), vampires, werewolves, and of course, Innkeepers.  What I find funny with this post though is that the two quotes I highlighted to use both deal with Dina’s relationship with her sister Maud.  There are lots of exciting things happening in the book:  alien invaders, interstellar travel, things blowing up, and romance.  But what struck me was the sisters.  So, here goes,

Maud is in the beginning of a relationship with a vampire warrior.  Did I mention the vampires are from another planet too?  Anyway, they are having a difference of opinion and he has done something particularly stupid.

My sister did that narrow thing with her eyes that used to make me run yelling for Mom . . .

And yes, he survives.

Later, Maud and Dina are talking about Christmas presents and Dina wants to know what Maud is getting her.

“I’m not going to tell you and I won’t let you snoop either.  You were always a terrible sneak, Dina.”

“That’s a lie.  I’m an excellent sneak.”

I love it!  The only problem with this series is that there are only three books.  This is definitely one that I could binge read.  I highly recommend them.  As you can tell, I think they are wonderful.

Quote-tastic Monday: Blood Kiss (Black Dagger Legacy, #1) by J. R. Ward

24903031I’m not sure how it has taken me a year to read this book.  I love the Black Dagger Brotherhood and somehow have managed to get three books behind if you include the books in the Black Dagger Legacy.  Yes, this book is not about the Brothers, but the Brothers are definitely integral to the plot.  The main characters are new trainees to fight against the Lessers, so of course, they are being trained by the Brothers.

Anyway, there is lots of violence and lots of sex, not to mention some really humorous scenes.  In this one, the main male character Craeg has been watching one of the other trainees Paradise.  He’s not supposed to be.  He should be concentrating on his training.  However, . . .

This couldn’t be happening to him.  The hardest part of training to become a soldier under the Brotherhood so he could avenge his family . . . could not possibly be some blonde female.  He just refused to believe this.

Not possible —

With another kick under his uniform, his erection seemed to be laughing at him.

Glaring down at his hips, he barked, “Shut up, idiot.”

Like all the BDB books, the language is harsh, the violence is disturbing, and the sex is explicit.

And I love them.  The Legacy series is going to be just as good as the originals.

Review:

I love Katie MacAlister because her books are funny. It doesn’t matter if they are historicals or paranormals, they are funny. This one however, may have slipped over the edge from funny to silly.

Make no mistake. I like it. It is funny, but it’s also almost too much. I am going to offer up a random quote which really was just thrown in there. I laughed when I read it, but it doesn’t actually have a bearing on the story.

“From a troll who runs a home for unwed poltergeists.”

Okay . . .

I don’t know what to say about that.

The funniest parts to me are Kiya’s conversations with her own mind. Her foster mom is a psychologist and Kiya knows far too much about her id, ego, and superego. They argue with each other after all and she argues with them. Yes, that’s as insane as it sounds.

One last thing: the description states the Travellers are outcasts. It’s more like they consider themselves better than anyone else and shun the rest of the world, both human and Other. They come off as real jerks.

There are two more books in this series and all three were published in 2013, so I doubt there will be anymore. I am still debating with myself (I have no idea what my id, ego, or superego think I should do) on whether to read them. The book was fun. It just wasn’t all that great.

If you are already a fan of MacAlister, give this one a try. If not, check out one of her other series. I highly recommend her Aisling Grey books.

Quote-tastic Monday: I Agree Stephanie!

I am going to have to start with the quote on this one.  I’ll give you short review at the end.

Grandma Mazur wants Stephanie to go with her to the viewing of a murder victim and she doesn’t want to go.

Plus, I don’t share Grandma’s enthusiasm for viewings.  The flower smell makes me nauseous.  I don’t like looking at dead people.  And I’m not all that excited about talking to live people.

And that’s where she nails it in my opinion.  The flowers give me a headache.  Dead “things” and that includes people creep me out.  And I don’t particular like to talk to a bunch of people at once.  Particularly in situations of high emotion.  I just don’t deal well with a lot of drama.

Having made my quote contribution for the week, I have to say a little about the book.  I was really disappointed in it and I am not sure why.  From the first page, it just didn’t read like a Stephanie Plum book.  I am a huge fan and always preorder the books, but this one just didn’t do it for me.  I kept thinking that there is no way Evanovich wrote this book.

Again, I don’t know why.  All the regular characters are there:  Joe and Ranger, of course, Lula and Grandma Mazur, and a few that we met in previous books.  The lines were right.  She destroys a car.  Everything is normal Stephanie.

It just wasn’t right.  Did I enjoy it?  Yes, but it didn’t have the magic I expect from Stephanie Plum.

Will I buy the next book?  Of course, but I’m looking forward to the new Knight and Moon more.  The title is Dangerous Minds and it is scheduled for publication in June.

Anyway, read Turbo Twenty-three if you already a fan.  Just don’t expect much.
