Title: Thirst by Jacquelyn Frank

Series:  The Energy Vampires, #1

Pages:  np (It took me about three hours to read.)

Publisher:  Loveswept

Date:  January 17, 2017
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Summary:

A hidden society of vampires—and the humans they love—are at the heart of this opening novel in a biting, all-original series from the New York Times bestselling author of the Nightwalkers saga.

Rafe DaSilva is an energy vampire, soaking up nourishment from the sun—and, only when necessary, drawing sweet sustenance from humans who are pure in body and spirit. As the right-hand man to his queen, Rafe is a key player at a historic peace summit in New York City, which will unite the vampire nations against a common threat: the sycophants, who feed on humanity and kill indiscriminately. But Rafe’s fascination with a beautiful blond police detective may put everything at risk.

Detective Renee Holden has never worked a homicide quite like this. The victim has twin puncture wounds on his neck, and the only eyewitness swears she saw a vampire. Now’s definitely not the time to get distracted by a seductive stranger. But the suave, darkly austere, exotically handsome Rafe DaSilva is a hard man to deny, and as Renee falls under his spell, she also falls prey to his enemies. Desperate to protect her, Rafe lifts the veil on a shadow realm she can only visit—a world of intoxicating power, terrifying dangers, and forbidden pleasures.

Review:

Okay, I am combining the review for this book with my regular Quote-tastic Monday post because I cannot bear the idea of having to think about it twice . . . and that should tell you my opinion if the one star does not. I am not sure I have ever given one star to a book and I know I have never given it to a book written by an author I normally like.

My very favorite book by Jacquelyn Frank is Jacob which may have been her first published book. It had an interesting, unique to me, premise of demons in our world and their interactions with humans. AND it was funny. I love funny books.

Thirst is not funny, at all. It also has a unique to me paranormal species: energy vampires. And if that name isn’t bad enough they are referred to as e-vampires. I don’t know why that bothered me so much, but it did. Anyway, they don’t drink blood, they draw energy from their “resources” by biting them on the back of the neck.

Oh yeah, good vampires only feed from good resources. A good resource is someone who lives clean, as in eats healthy, exercises, doesn’t smoke, or do drugs. The reader gets an entire section on organic food just to make it clear how important a clean resource is to a good vampire.

Obviously, bad vampires only eat from the rest of us and it makes them evil.

I can’t even say anymore about that.

As you can tell, I didn’t like the book from the beginning and it never improved. If I hadn’t promised to review it for NetGalley, I would have never finished it. And it got worse. I’ve never had the occasion to use the phrased “jumped the shark,” but now I can.

At the very end, where Rafe is explaining where e-vampires (cringe, cringe) come from, he states that they are actually descendants of aliens whose spaceship was struck by lightning over 500 years ago.

Really? REALLY!!??

Please do not waste your time with this book. Read her Nightwalker series instead. It’s wonderful. This one just isn’t.

Okay, a quote.

Renee, who is a homicide detective, has a chance to infiltrate the bad e-vampires and Rafe thinks it is too dangerous. He has told her that he will not allow it and she reacts as expected . . . badly.

Rafe realized he was going about this all wrong. She was an intelligent woman. He had to appeal to her intellect. And the more he told her what she couldn’t do, the more she would want to do it just to spite him.

Because all intelligent women do things just to spite their lovers. -sigh-

I’m done. So done.

This book was sent to me by NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Quote-tastic Monday: Murder of Crows by Anne Bishop

This is the third time I have read/listened to this series and I love it more every time.  The plot line is unique to me and that is saying something.  I have read so many books over the years that nothing ever seems to be really new to me.  There may be a twist, but nothing is completely new.  The Others series is an exception.  The entire concept is new.  And yes, I know I have used the word “new” three times in this paragraph.

Anyway, even though I have read/listened to the series three times, I cannot give you an exact quote because I am listening, not reading in print form.  It’s just really hard to find an exact phrase in an Audible book.  The two phrases that have stuck with me so far are when Simon (wolf shapeshifter) wants to play with Meg (special type of human, not prey).  She is furious with him and he realizes that the only game she probably wants to play is “whack a wolf.”

I love that.  For some reason it cracks me up every time I hear it.

The other phrase was coined by Simon to describe Meg and her human pack.  Simon came up with the idea, but the other Others have taken to using it as well. (And again yes, I know that I have just typed other Others.)  He calls them “exploding fluffballs.”  Need I say, he does not call them that to their faces?

These books have become some of my all time favorites.  Anything and everything is put aside for a new Others book.  I cannot wait until March for Etched in Bone.  As the wolf puppies said on their Facebook page, those aren’t etchings, they’re teethmarks.  And I can’t wait to get my teeth into the next book.crowsquote-tastic final with green border

Quote-tastic Monday: Dominance Never Dies by Lexi Blake

“Quote-Tastic” is a meme hosted every Monday on Herding Cats & Burning Soup. Head on over there to see what everyone else is posting about this week.

This is the eleventh book in the Master & Mercenaries series.  These books are serious security/BDSM romances which are actually hysterically funny.  I wouldn’t like them nearly as much if it wasn’t for the humor in them.  It’s not the situations that are funny necessarily.  It’s the lines and the characters reactions to each other.

Anyway, this book had a number of lines that I loved, but I’ll just give you one of Mia’s.

She should have damn well known that cleaning up after a couple of murders was definitely women’s work.

And that’s the closest any of these characters get to being a stereotype.

I highly recommend this series, BUT READ THEM IN ORDER.  The story lines continue from book to book and you will be totally lost if you try to pick up somewhere in the middle.  Of course, the books are so great that reading the entire series will be a treat.

By the way, book twelve Submission is Not Enough comes out this Tuesday, October 25th and I cannot wait.

Quote-tastic Monday: Crimson Death

I am reading Laurell K. Hamilton’s new Anita Blake for the second time BECAUSE I neglected to write the review the first time I read it.  The release date is tomorrow, October 11th and it’s only been a month since I read it.  You would think I would be able to remember it well enough to review and I can.  I just don’t think I can give it the justice it deserves.  It’s a great book although there are things that happen that I really, really didn’t like.

Anyway, that’s why this week’s quote is coming from Crimson Death.  I am reading it again. -sigh-

As long time readers of this series will know, Anita is terrified of flying.  She doesn’t like takeoffs, landings, or anything in between.  In this book, she has no choice but to take a multi-hour flight.  Because she knows her emotions will be out of control, she has to contact everyone she has a metaphysical link with and that’s a really long list.

Her solution:  group texts.

Yay technology. making polyamorous relationships better since the iPhone was invented.

And, once again, how did we survive without our cell/smart phones?

Quote-tastic Monday: And yes, I know it’s not Monday

Thursday!  Thursday’s the new Monday, right?  Lord, I hope not.  I’d hate to go through this week again.  Anyway, better late than never comes this week’s Quote-tastic Monday.  (And no, I’m not discussing the fact that I missed last week altogether.)

Jill Shalvis’ new book The Trouble with Mistletoe came out this past Tuesday (Okay, two Tuesdays!  I’m behind in everything!) and I read it on its release day.  The fact that I was in the middle of another book which I need to finish for review did not matter.  It was a new Jill Shalvis people.  There are priorities after all.

Anyway, Keane is petsitting/has inherited a cat from his aunt and he has no idea on how to care for her.  The cat is destroying his house and is not hesitant to show her opinion of Keane.

. . . And then she . . .” He trailed off and appeared to chomp on his back teeth.

“What?”

“Took a dump in my favorite running shoes.”

Willa owns a pet salon and gift shop, so he goes to her for help.  Unfortunately for him, she knows and hates him from high school . . . and he doesn’t even remember her.  Not the best situation in which to be asking for a favor.

Fortunately for Keane, Willa is a soft touch particularly where animals are concerned.

“What’s her name?” she asked.

“Petunia, but I’m going with Pita.  Short for pain in the ass.”

I love it!  It reminds me of the old Disney movie “That Darn Cat” in which the cat was called DC for Darn Cat.  The original pre-Disney version was That Damn Cat or at least that is what I have heard.

Anyway, the book is wonderful and the second in her Heartbreaker Bay series.  Grab it.  It’s lots of fun.

Quote-tastic Monday: River Marked by Patricia Briggs

You know there’s a reason I love Mercy Thompson.  She reminds me of myself.  Not that I’m the badass she is, but I can be annoying.

In this quote, she’s talking to Stefan who doesn’t want to listen to her.  I cannot understand why.

You might as well give in because I’ll just annoy you until you do.

Love her, love her, love her!

Quote-tastic Monday: Creepy Babies

Sorry I missed last week.  I was at DragonCon in Atlanta and that had priority over everything else.  I will say I got to see Patricia Briggs of Mercy Thompson fame and I caught myself wanting to stay in the room re-reading her books instead of going to panels.  Fortunately, there were a lot of lines to wait in, so I still had time to read.

This week’s quote is from the new Eve Dallas book by J. D. Robb:  Apprentice in Death.  I love Eve and Roarke and it’s hard to believe this is book forty-three.  I don’t know if that includes the novellas she has also released or not, but that is one prolific author.

Anyway, Eve is investigating the murder of an OB/GYN and he has numerous photos in his home of babies he has delivered.  Eve’s reaction is definitely not “Awww.  How sweet.”

Many of the babies — the really fresh ones — struck her as creepy.  They either looked like fish, or really pissed-off alien life-forms.

You know, she has a point.

I finished the book in three days and it only took that long because I had to work.  I cannot wait for retirement!

Quote-tastic Monday: The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron

Alright, this one is totally different from my normal reading material, but I am hooked.  It’s funny, as in odd, not humorous.  I have no interest in creating anything whether it is writing, painting, music, etc.  I told a friend who is an art teacher once that all artists need an audience and that is my job.  I am happy with that role.  This book however really has some good nuggets.  Some of them are her words and some are quotes from other people.  Either way, I am enjoying them.

This week’s quote is actually a quote of a quote of a quote.  I am quoting the author who is quoting Erica Jong.

Take your life in your own hands and what happens?  A terrible thing:  no one to blame.

I have read variations of that thought before.  Years ago, I read a passage in “something” where the author was bemoaning that she wanted to write a book, but did not have time.  Her friend told her she would find the time for anything she really wanted to do.  She said the advice made her mad because she knew it was true.

That has stuck with and I have a feeling this quote by Jong will as well.

Quote-tastic Monday: I’ve got nothing!

I’m in a slump.  I am reading five different books and I’m not particularly interested in any of them.  I have searched for quotes that would be good for this post, and nothing.  The books are not bad.  They just aren’t what I want to read right now.

What do I want to read?  Books that AREN’T PUBLISHED YET!  -sigh-

There is nothing!  Nothing! Nothing until at least September.

I think I need a comfort read.

Quote-tastic Monday: The Summer Bride by Anne Gracie

This is the fourth book in the Chance Sisters series and as far as I know, it is the last.  However, there is definitely room for at least one more book.

Anyway, I have to say that Flynn is my favorite hero from the series.  I loved them all, but he is such a scamp, he outshines them.  Oddly enough my quote does not involve him and Daisy, but Flynn and Lady Beatrice.  Lady Beatrice is an elderly woman who has taken in and claimed the Chance sisters.  She has the most personality of all of the characters in my opinion.  Anyway, she forced Flynn to attend a dancing lesson with the sisters because she knows he does not come from a privileged background and assumes he needs all the help he can get.  She is proven wrong (something that rarely happens) at a ball the very next night.

“Why did you not tell me you knew how to dance?”

Flynn smiled.  “I never tell a lady what she doesn’t wish to hear.”

She snorted again.  “That little habit — if it’s true — is going to get you into a lot of trouble then.”  Her beady old eyes twinkled up at him.  “I look forward to it.”

“So do I, ma’am, so do I.”

Didn’t I tell you he was a scamp?Summer Bride
