Primal Kiss (Breeds, #23) by Lora Leigh in Primal anthology

The only story I have read out of this anthology is LL’s Primal Kiss.  The story is about Kita and Creed with a lot of Cassie thrown in.  I did not particularly like this story, although I love the Breed series.  Creed’s whole “I don’t know if I really want a mate” ticked me off with him.  I also thought there was too much of other storylines thrown in for what was actually only a short story.

I don’t know if I like the direction this series is taking and I have been reading them since the very first one was published.

Four Play by Maya Banks and Shayla Black

Purchased

In Pillow Talk by Maya Banks, Zoe is a woman in a committed relationship with her boyfriend Chase. Then one night, Chase reveals his number-one fantasy, which involves his two best buddies. Is Zoe game? She sure is, because it opens the door for a secret fantasy all her own. In Shayla Black’s Her Fantasy Men, a girly-girl named Kelsey plays football, craves action movies, and loves knocking back a cold beer with her three best friends-all male. Yet she’s never seemed sexually interested in any one of these hot guys. So what does Kelsey want? A fantasy come true for all four of them. (from Goodreads)

Sigh!  Maya Banks wrote one of my all time favorite books/series about the Colters.  Unfortunately, I think that is the only really good book she had in her.  I buy them all and continue to be disappointed.

Shayla Black is another author I need to quit auto buying.  I don’t think I have ever loved any of her books, but they are okay.  Sometimes I just get into the habit with an author whether they deserve it or not.

Styx’s Storm (Breeds, #22) by Lora Leigh

Purchased

When Storme Montague’s father and brother are killed by the Breeds, her father’s research is also destroyed — except for a crucial data chip that both the Council and the Breeds would kill to possess.  Betrayed to the Council, she is rescued by Styx, a Wolf Breed who is different from most other Breeds she has ever known.  Storme has something he wants too — but it’s not a data chip.

This is the first of the Breed stories that I remember the human actively hating and fearing the Breeds.  Storme has reason enough to do so, but I think this aspect is overplayed.  We are all affected by what happens when we are young, but she doesn’t seem to exhibit any growth in emotional development unless it is a strengthening of her prejudice.

Having said that, I really liked the book.  Styx is a Scots which is definitely a first for these books.  I don’t know if Lora Leigh is just jumping on the Highlander bandwagon or simply expanding the ethnic development of her Breeds.  She also introduces a different aspect of mating heat.  I really think she may be going in the wrong direction there.

Tracker’s Sin (Hell’s Eight, #4) by Sarah McCarty

Purchased

WED BY NECESSITY…JOINED BY DESIRE

Before his trade became his name, “Tracker” Ochoa was a scrawny Mestizo runaway. Now as fearsome as he once was frightened, he’s joined the notorious Hell’s Eight…and they have a job for him.

He must rescue kidnapped heiress Ari Blake and deliver her safely to the Hell’s Eight compound—by any means necessary. Turns out that includes marrying her, if he means to escort her and her infant son across the Texas Territory. Tracker hadn’t bargained on a wife—especially such a fair, blue-eyed beauty. But the erotic pleasures of the marriage bed more than make up for the surprise.

Tracker’s well-muscled bronze skin and dark, dangerous eyes are far more exciting than any of Ari’s former debutante dreams. In the light of day, though, his deep scars and brooding intensity terrify her. But he’s her husband and she’s at his mercy. With the frontier against them and mercenary bandits at their heels, Ari fears she’ll never feel safe again.

Tracker, too, remembers what fear feels like. Though he burns to protect Ari, to keep her for himself always, he knows that money, history—and especially the truth—can tear them apart. (from Goodreads)

The first book in this series, Caine’s Reckoning, was also the first book I purchased for my Sony Reader.  I had read wonderful reviews about it, not to mention the raves on the Romantic Times discussion board.  I kept saying, “but I don’t read Westerns.”  I am so glad I changed my mind and tried it.  I promptly purchased everything else Sarah McCarty had written and my only complaint is she doesn’t publish fast enough to keep up with me.

In Tracker’s Sin, we finally meet Ari who the Hell’s Eight have been searching for since book one.  There was definitely an unexpected twist to her rescue, but it worked.  Ari and Tracker are both emotionally damaged and neither really believes they are good enough for the other.

I think the next book will be about Tracker’s brother Shadow, but it is hard to tell.  She has other series that have new books first.  I do know that when book eight is finally released (years from now I am sure), I will sit down and read these straight through.

Last Dragon Standing (Dragon Kin, #4) by G. A. Aiken

I know what they see when they look at me. The charming, soft-spoken dragoness bred from the most powerful of royal bloodlines. A disguise stronger than any battle shield that allows me to keep all suitors at tail’s length. A technique that’s worked until him. Until Ragnar the Cunning, handsome barbarian warlord and warrior mage from the desolate Northlands. Unlike those who’ve come before him, he does not simply submit to my astounding charm and devastating smile. Instead, he dismisses me as vapid, useless and, to my great annoyance, rather stupid!

Yet I’ll allow no male to dismiss me. Soon he’ll learn my worth, my many skills, and the strength of my will. For this one challenges me enough to make me want to ruthlessly taunt him, tease him and, finally, when the trap is set, bring him to his knees. (from Goodreads)

This is a great author who also writes under the name Shelly Laurenston.  Her books are funny, exciting and hot.  This series is about a world with dragons who can take human form.  There is a real difference in the mindset of humans who take animal form an creatures who can take a human form.  Katie MacAlister shows this as well in her Aisling Grey series.

The only problem I had with this book is I could not remember the back story very well from the previous titles.  I would normally have gone back and re-read the series, but did not take the time.  That was definitely a mistake.  When her next book is released, I will definitely do so.

Renegade (Elite Ops, #6) by Lora Leigh

Purchased

As a bridal shop owner, Mikayla Martin helps make women’s wedding dreams come true. Her own life, however, has become a nightmare since she witnessed a murder—and got an up-close-and-personal look at the killer. What’s worse: She knows she knows him. But the police, after doing an alibi check, don’t believe her. It’s up to Mikayla to prove them wrong…and do whatever it takes to solve the murder by herself.

Elite Ops agent Nikolai Steele, code name Renegade, is asked to pay an old comrade a favor. This friend swears he’s no killer—and Nik believes him—even though he’s been mistaken as one by Mikayla. So Nik goes to set her straight…but the moment he lays eyes on the fiery and determined beauty, he knows he’s in too deep. A woman this irresistible can only mean trouble and, sure enough, after sticking her nose in one too many places, someone wants Mikayla dead. Now Nik must find a way to keep her safe, clear his friend’s name, and find the real killer, who remains on the loose… (from Goodreads)

If ever there was a series I want to re-read straight through, the Elite Ops is one.  Of course, I would really have to start with her SEALS’ series because the Elite Ops is a spin-off of it.

Having said that, this book actually does a better job of standing alone than many of her others.  There are characters from previous books, but not so many that I couldn’t keep them straight.

I don’t think Lora Leigh can write a bad book.  She writes across a variety of genres and does an excellent job in all of them.  Renegade is just another example of what a good author she is.

Into the Crossfire (Protectors, #1) by Lisa Marie Rice

Purchased

Former Navy SEAL Sam Reston keeps to himself. His world is dangerous, uncertain, violent…and there is no room in it for the helpless and weak. Then the most beautiful woman in the world moves in next door to him . . . .

Nicole Pearce’s life is complicated enough—with an ailing father and a new business to worry about—and the last thing she needs is to get involved with a secretive, hard-bodied, hardheaded neighbor. Yet Sam leaves her breathless—her body tingling with erotic desire—and it takes every ounce of her fabled control to resist offering herself to him, no strings attached. What she doesn’t know is that Sam Reston is on an undercover assignment . . . and she’s about to step into the crossfire.

Never has Sam ached for a woman so badly, and he’s never fallen in love before. Now that Nicole is in grave danger, he will become her shield, and guard the tempting body he longs to touch and taste. Because a terrorist plot hatched half a world away is heading to their doorstep—and it can only be derailed by one man and one woman. (from Goodreads)

I started reading Lisa Marie Rice when I discovered her Midnight series.  I have read and re-read those three books several times.  Since then, I have purchased and read everything else I could find by her, but none of them have lived up to the Midnight ones.

This book does!

It’s ironic that I love the alpha males so much in reading.  I expect I would laugh in their face in real life.  Nicole is not a wimp by any means.  She was brought up with the classic silver spoon, but when the necessity arose she walked away from that life to care for her father.  She is not stupid either.  She knows she is in over her head with the terrorists and is willing to rely on Sam to help her.

My only problem is that I do not want to wait for the next book in the series.  Hotter Than Wildfire is due out in March 2011.

Nauti Kisses (Nauti) by Lora Leigh in Nauti and Wild anthology

Purchased

This is supposed to be the last story in the Nauti series and does a good job of not leaving any loose endings.  There are no characters still hanging out there waiting for their own stories.  Having said that, I don’t want the books to end.  I love all of Lora Leigh’s work and this series is not exception.

Rogue’s brother John and Sierra are the leads in this story.  After a extremely blurry (in John’s mind) night of passion, Sierra starts avoiding John.  She won’t return his calls or see him for any reason.  John, who has just broken up with his fiance, decides to leave town and start his life over.

A year later, he finds out that Sierra has been attacked and nearly killed.  She is sent to John for protection until the bad guy can be found.  Of course, the bad guy follows and Sierra is in danger again.

The book brings back the McKays, their wives, and children.  It was wonderful to see them all again and really makes me want to re-read the series straight through.  There are so many characters in these books, I almost need an annotated list.

Hunting Season (The Gathering, #1) by Shelly Laurenston

Purchased

Stubborn, lethal, and from Jersey…what more could a Viking warrior want from his woman?

Neecy Lawrence, winged warrior for a Viking goddess and second-in-command of the fierce Crows, doesn’t know what to do with a nice guy. As it is, making up for a past she’d sooner forget leaves her barely polite most days. But Raven leader and loyal Odin warrior, Will Yager, isn’t just nice. He’s gorgeous, hot, and a distraction she simply can’t afford.

Yager has wanted Neecy in his life—and in his bed—for a long time. Not just for a night, but forever. And, like any self-respecting Viking, he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants. So what if she’s the most difficult, complex, never-gives-him-a-break woman he’s ever known? She’s more than worth the effort. In fact, she’s worth everything. (from Goodreads)

I love Shelly Laurenston’s books.  It doesn’t matter if they are under this name or G. A. Aiken, they are hysterically funny.  Hunting Season is the first in a new series and I can already see story lines developing.  I have a small familiarity with Norse mythology, but I have not heard of the Ravens and Crows.  I don’t know if they were created for the book or actually based on mythology.  I guess it is a compliment to the author that she made me care enough to want to find out.

Although I did not like this book as much as some of her earlier ones (I adore her bears and wild dogs), I cannot wait for the sequel.  Of course, I never want to wait for a new book by this author!

Promises Keep (Promises, #2) by Sarah McCarty

Promises Keep (Promises, #2)
Every time I read or re-read a Sarah McCarty title, I remember how good she really is as an author.

Promises Keep is the second book in her Promises series.  There are four now with a fifth promised (pun intended) in 2010. The first three were originally published with Ellora’s Cave which tells you how sexually explicit they can be.

The thing about these books is that the sex is not the point.  These books are romances through and through.  There is an alpha male with a strong female who is normally overcoming a violent past.  That is a particular twist in Promises Keep.

The only reason I haven’t bought and read more of her books is that she hasn’t released them yet.  Sarah McCarty is definitely on my “gotta have them” the first day they are released list.
